Define the required outcome first

A factory reset can mean different things across products and configurations. Before relying on it, identify the device, the storage involved, and the data-handling outcome your organization requires. A screen saying the reset is complete is not the same as a record demonstrating that your approved disposal process was followed. Ask the responsible IT staff to decide what is appropriate for the actual device.

Separate preparation from the final record

Removing a device from an employee account or restoring settings may be part of retirement preparation. Your organization may still require an approved sanitization or destruction process and supporting documentation. Keep those steps separate in the checklist so one task is not accidentally treated as proof that every other task has been completed.

Use policy and media details to guide the decision

NIST SP 800-88 Revision 2 provides guidance for a media-sanitization program based on the information and applicable controls. Use that framework to ask about the method for your media and how completion is established. Do not choose a process only because the computer is old, broken, or no longer useful to your staff.

Tell the recycler what has already been done

Describe prior reset attempts and whether the media remains installed. Do not include passwords or confidential files in the inquiry. If your scope requires storage destruction, state that explicitly and request the agreed serialized records. Stark can review business computer and loose-media collections with your internal handling requirements. Retain the release list and final records rather than relying solely on an employee’s recollection of a reset.

Quick checklist

  • Describe prior reset attempts.
  • Identify installed media.
  • Use the approved disposal process.

Common question

What if an employee already reset a device?

Record what was done and let the responsible IT or security team determine whether additional handling is needed. Do not assume the reset satisfies your disposal policy. Give the collection provider the approved final scope and keep the required documentation for that scope.
